Where to Buy the Best Leather Bags in Florence

Florence is one of the easiest cities in Italy to encounter leather goods, that part is undeniable. But that ease doesn't mean every leather bag you see shares the same origin, quality or genuine connection to Florentine craftsmanship. If you're visiting the city and want to buy an authentic Italian leather bag, slow down, look closely, and ask questions before you reach for your wallet.

Start With Santa Croce

For anyone genuinely interested in leather, Santa Croce is one of the most meaningful areas of Florence to visit, not just for shopping, but for the history behind it. Misuri has been located in Piazza Santa Croce since 1906, a continuity you can walk into rather than simply read about.

Don't Confuse Location With Origin

A bag sold in Florence is not automatically a Florentine bag, that distinction is easy to miss and worth holding onto. Before buying, ask where the bag was actually made, whether it's genuinely Made in Italy, what type of leather it uses, which parts were made by hand, and how it's expected to age over time.

Look at the Bag Before Looking at the Label

Start with the leather itself, then move to the handles, corners, strap attachments, stitching and closures. Open the bag and examine the inside too, that's often where care either shows up or doesn't. A quality bag should make sense the moment you look closely at how it was actually put together.

Ask What Kind of Leather You're Buying

Calfskin, lambskin and other hides each carry different characteristics. Grain, finish and tanning method also change how a bag feels, performs and ages over the years. A knowledgeable seller should be able to explain exactly why a particular leather was chosen, not just confirm that it's leather.

Understand What "Handmade" Really Means

Handmade doesn't necessarily mean every single operation was performed without tools or machinery, that's a common misconception worth correcting. Ask which parts of the construction genuinely depend on artisan work, specifics matter more than the word itself.

Be Cautious With Very Low Prices

Good leather, skilled labour and careful construction all carry real cost. Price alone doesn't prove quality, but it should make logical sense in relation to what you're being told about materials, origin and production, if the story and the price don't add up, that's worth noticing.

Don't Buy Just Because Something Smells Like Leather

The smell of leather is not a reliable test of quality or origin, however convincing it feels in the moment. The same goes for softness. Use several signs together instead: construction, material, origin, finishing and how transparent the seller actually is.

What Should You Actually Buy in Florence?

A good purchase should still make sense once you're back home, that's the real test. Think about structure, carrying style, capacity, colour, and honestly how often you'll reach for the piece once the holiday feeling has worn off.

Is Buying Leather in Florence Worth It?

It can be, especially if you use the experience to actually learn about what you're buying rather than rushing the decision. Florence gives you access to a place where leather craftsmanship carries genuine history, and where very different approaches can be compared within walking distance of each other. Misuri is one of them.
